I recently wrote some music for a documentary called Under Cane which examines the human cost of sugar harvesting.

The 14 min film is about Sugarcane harvesters in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, who have a life expectancy of only 46 years, with many of them dying from chronic kidney disease. Experts think they may have figured out why the workers are being afflicted at such an alarming rate. But the plantation owners have their own ideas about the root cause. Regardless of who's right, the toll on the community has been grief and heartbreak for those suffering from the disease and for their families.
The film was created by Talking Eyes Media, a non-profit organization that creates powerful media for pressing issues. Run by writer/producer Julie Winokur and photographer/filmmaker Ed Kashi, it was a privilege to collaborate with superb visual storytellers on such a pressing subject.
